Learning Support Assistant
This qualification provides learners with the skills and knowledge needed when working directly with children and young people in a school or college environment. It will enable learners to gain an understanding of elements including child development, safeguarding and welfare and supporting in the classroom. This qualification will include a particular focus on supporting children and young people with Special Educational Needs and/or disabilities and students will gain experience of a range of specialist skills, developing their knowledge and understanding within the area. The course is aimed at students aged 16-18 years of age although older students will be considered.
The course is of a two year duration and is offered through a nested approach with stepping off points at the Award, Certificate and Diploma levels.
Entry Requirements: 4 (C) grade pass in both English and Maths
The course features:
- Full time placement in a special school
- 4 days in class / 1 study day
- Tutor and mentor support
- Experience of working around the schools in all departments and Key Stages
- Opportunity to work and get paid at the After School Club and Holiday Play Scheme
- Tasks and assignments, some based on personal reflections from the classroom
- Access to whole school staff training
- Opportunities to gain a range of specialist strategies in working with children and young people with special educational needs
The following Units of study are taught at each level : Award (units 1-4, ) Certificate (units 1-11) and Diploma (units 1-16) :
Award 1-4
- Schools and colleges as organisations
- Support health and safety in a learning environment
- Understanding how to safeguard children and young people
- Understand how children and young people develop
Certificate 1-11
- Develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults
- Supporting positive behaviour in children and young people
- Support the use of ICT in the learning environment
- Support assessment for learning (AfL)
- Engage in personal and professional development
- Supporting children and young people during learning activities
- Support English and Maths skills
Diploma 1-16
- Understanding how to support the learning of people with special needs and disabilities
- Supporting children and young people during transitions
- Supporting children and young people’s speech, language and communication
- How to support bilingual learners
- How to support the role of play, leisure and extra-curricular activities for children and young people
Enhanced learning opportunities will be provided through:
- Online courses in food hygiene, fire safety awareness, safeguarding and manual handling
- Weekly assessment tasks throughout the year
- Continuing mentor and tutor support
- Possible placements at our partner SEN school
